Walloon technological offensive in Cannes

Each year, the same beautiful song rings in our ears: a series of films with a strong Walloon connotation is selected in different sections at the Cannes festival, which, given the size of our region is an exploit many still do not seize up correctly.
This year once more, Wallimage lines up three feature films in three sections: Le Gamin au Vélo in the official competition, Les Géants as closing film in the Directors’ Fortnight and the French-Belgian co-production L’Exercice de l’État with Olivier Gourmet in Un Certain Regard.

As you are well aware of, Wallimage doesn’t limit itself to co-producing feature films. Wallimage-Entreprises exists to invest in Walloon audiovisual structures, because without a specialised industry there is no hope to develop a film industry worthy of its name.

These enterprises and many others are united in the Twist Cluster in order to up their striking force. This year, ten of these companies work together to represent the Walloon film industry in Cannes. Ten, like in ten years for Wallimage: quite a homage!

These enterprises and many others are united in the Twist Cluster in order to up their striking force. This year, ten of these companies work together to represent the Walloon film industry in Cannes. Ten, like in ten years for Wallimage: quite a homage!

Sometimes they work as a leasing agency for shoot material (like TSF.Be-Athalys), putting their extensive knowledge of the tools at the service of Belgian or European cameramen, other times they are active in the world of post-production; their proposed performances cover all stages of editing and grading (Dame Blanche, Mikros Image Liège) as well as special effects (Digital Graphics, Benuts and again Mikros), mixing (L’Equipe Wallonie and SonicPil) and sound effects (Genval les Dames) and last but not least gaming Belle Productions). These companies constantly evolve and today they are capable of offering services with very high added value. All of them will be present, together with the Liège Image Cluster, at te Belgian Pavilion (International Village, 134 – Film Market) to showcase their skills.

The same pavilion also houses the Federal Government with its Tax Shelter activity and of course the regional initiatives Cinema Made in Wallonia and Cinema Made In Brussels which unite the regional investment funds Bruxellimage and Wallimage; the film commissions (Clap!, Batch, Agence du Film and Bruxelles Tournage) as well as the TWIST cluster and the Germanophone Community.

These companies adapt to the demand of the professionals, because the audiovisual world is in constant motion. The trend of the years 2010 is crossmedia, a mixing of media and supports which enhances the subject by diversifying the approaches.

Being on top of the evolution, the Walloon Region will announce a new booming initiative in Cannes, which could very well do a lot of good for the regional technical industries... and the film industry. Jean-Claude Marcourt, Walloon Minister of Economy will officially launch a support fund for the development of crossmedia ... within the framework of Wallimage of course! Obviously, we will reveal much more during the upcoming festivities at Cannes.
