Take a bicycle to the European Film Awards

Best Film, Best Directing, Best Screenplay, Best Actress: Le Gamin au Vélo has been nominated in those four categories at the European Film Awards. Given the size of the list of preselected films, just to be nominated is already a huge honour for the Dardenne brothers, especially after their Special Prize of the Jury at Cannes earlier this year and the following series of awards won in Italy over the summer. Not to mention 600,000 people across Europe who enjoyed the touching, but also artistically challenging film, clearly bearing its makers’ stamp.

The three categories directly involving Jean-Pierre and Luc show some stiff competition as the other nominees include extremely well made films such as Le Havre, Melancholia, The King’s Speech, In a Better World (Suzanne Bier’s latest, always a favourite for this kind of award) and The Artist, pegged for the Oscars. The battle will be harsh!

Cécile de France can also expect tough competition running for Best Actress, as she faces the always impeccable Tilda Swinton (We need to talk about Kevin), Nadezhda Markina (Elena) and two actresses from Melancholia: Charlotte Gainsbourg and Kirsten Dunst. The latter already got the best of Cécile at the Cannes Festival...

The only small disappointment with Les Films du Fleuve is the absence of the young Thomas Doret, as confirmed actors such as Jean Dujardin, Colin Firth and Michel Piccoli were selected in that category ... and the European Film Awards are (as of yet?) missing a Best Newcomer award.

Another disappointment is the total absence of Rundskop: Michael Roskam’s thriller did not manage to get through the pre-selections. May it be some comfort for Thomas, as Matthias Schoenaerts, who has never been better, was not considered either. A shame, really.

At the last edition of the European Film Awards, Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer swept the awards while Sylvie Testud won Best Actress for Lourdes. For the first time since 2007 the award ceremony will take place in Berlin, on 3th December. Ange Engelke will present the evening, in front of some 1200 handpicked guests. Not a irst for this charming German actress, as she already lead the happening in 2009 in Bochum and in 2010 in Talinn where she co-presented with Estonian comedian Märt Avandi. For this occasion, designer Jürgen Schmidt will set up the space in the heart of the city.
Without a doubt, the European Film Award are becoming the credible and attractive European Oscars. Of course it is a pleasure to find Le Gamin au Vélo amid the nominees at such a gala, the Belgian film industry can be proud. So is, of course, Wallimage, which always believed in the brothers and never once regretted it.
