Sandrine Bonnaire is not only an exceptional actress, but she is also on her way to becoming a great director. She immediately followed up her first film, a documentary about her sister, with a painful fictional story, about a couple torn apart by the death of a child, caught up in troubling circumstances.

J’enrage de son absence, co-financed by Wallimage/Bruxellimage has just been selected for the Semaine de la Critique at Cannes, as a Special Screening. This means there are a total of four films representing the Walloon fund at the festival as of today. For the Brussels-based branch it is however a first in 2012.

A family, consisting of Mado, the mother, Stéphane, the father, and Paul, the son. They lead a peaceful and trivial, almost insignificant life. A lifetime ago, Mado had a child with Jacques, which was killed in an accident and the couple didn’t survive. Jacques, feeling responsible, went to live in the US. In order to take care of his recently deceased father’s inheritance, he returns to France. He hasn’t been able to forget Mado and visits her, developing a deep affection for Paul which looks like a morbid transfer. A strange relationship exists between the child and the man who is slowly becoming dependant, bordering on insanity.

The screenplay was superb and the project appealing, so it was only natural the board of directors of Wallimage/Bruxellimage did not hesitate long to make the decision to co-produce this rather unconventional drama submitted by Iris Film.

Then, we discovered the almost finished film, which turned out to be a revelation. Sandrine Bonnaire does not limit herself to her role as screenplay writer, but she shows a sense of image and sensitivity which immediately class her with the big names in the industry.

Of course, the casting contributes to the magic of the project. An unexpected casting as well, starring William Hurt, her ex-husband, and Alexandra Lamy, who kind of plays a double of Sandrine Bonnaire: the same gracious profile, same tense face, the same reserve. As often in films directed by talented actors, the actor directing is superb.

Tense, without being austere, painful without being a tearjerker, J’enrage de son absence is a real festival film with the potential of having a good cinema career. Almost unbelievable, but a true success!
