Wallimage will once again have four films selected for the main sections of the Cannes Festival. Ernest et Célestine, co-produced between La Parti Production in Belgium, Les Armateurs in France and Melusine in Luxembourg, has just been announced for the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs.

This feature film is the work of the slightly crazy due behind Panic at the Village: Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar. For this very different experience they associated with Frenchman Benjamin Renner.

Ernest et Célestine is once more proof that in Wallonia, cinema can count on a cutting edge technical industry, seeing how Digital Graphics and Dame Blanche Genval are among the high-tech companies who contributed their know-how to the success of this adventure.

It is no longer surprising to find animated films on the Croisette. Sometimes they are very commercial films, such as Madagascar 3 (official selection, not in competition), sometimes they make less noise. The Quinzaine des Réalisateurs favours the latter by selecting Ernest et Célestine, an adaptation of children’s books written by the Belgian author Gabrielle Vincent.

For Patar and Aubier, known for their image per image animated art and their off-kilter Belgian-surrealist sense of humour, this is an interesting change of style. Well yes, this film which has been in production for several long months, will surprise ... with its simplicity, friendliness and its classicism also. No motion capture, 3D, figurines or plasticine, instead a sober and delicate animated film, old-school style, and very sweet.

Behind the scenes of this adaptation, a real dream team gathered : Daniel Pennac (Prix Renaudot 2007) wrote the screenplay, and Goran Bregovic, Emir Kusturica’s composer of choice made the original soundtrack. Lambert Wilson is the voice of Ernest. In addition to the directors, some renowned Belgian technicians worked on the project as well. As an example: Luc Thomas (sound engineer), Philippe Van Leer (sound effects) and Marc Bastien (sound editor).

The colouring and watercolours were made at Digital Graphics in Alleur. We know that this studio uses a rather traditional craft, very intuitive and with a team spirit quite unique in the industry. They do not hesitate to develop their own software or to train artists who would’ve never even thought of working on a film. Two years ago, Digital Graphics was part of the incredible success of The Secret of Kells, which worked its way up to the Oscars. Director Tomm Moore, who was delighted by their work, has rehired them for his new feature, currently in production: Le Chant de la Mer.

Dame Blanche Genval participated in the adventure by doing the sound effects.

This nice line-up worked on a sweet friendship story between a tiny mouse who didn’t want to become a dentist and a bear who dreamed of escaping a notary career. Where did they meet? In a trash can. Ernest, a big bear living on the margins of society, suffering from a cold and famished, is ready to devour anything he can get his hands on, when suddenly a scream resounds! The tiny mouse he was going to devour begs him for her life. This plea for help will turn Ernest’s life upside down and be the beginning of a friendship which the mouse world (the below world) and the bear world (the above world) will try to destroy, fortunately in vain. Ernest and Célestine will beat the prejudices.

It goes without saying that we are miles away from the crazy and exciting adventures of Cowboy and Indian. This only serves as proof that Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar are capable to step outside the boundaries everyone thought them to be confined to and are still able to experiment. Such an approach is far from being old-fashioned, but almost punk these days.
