Wallimage’s 89th investment session took place just before Cannes festival’s kick off. During this hectic time, our talented producers came with loads of excellent projects. With its selection of eight projects, Wallimage prepares itself for a bright Cannes 2019!

World class directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne once again brought an excellent production meeting all of the fund’s economic criteria for approval. Strongly rooted in the Liege area and produced by Liege-based Les Films du Fleuve, “Ahmed” primarily employs technicians from Wallonia and features a new talent in the leading role. Chances are good that this will end up on Cannes’ Croisette.

Presented by Tarantula, « Poissonsexe » is the new film of director Olivier Babinet who is also a regular at Cannes. This funny, moving and timely production brings together a talented team including Kaurismäki’s director of photography and a member of the French band “Air” as soundtrack composer. In Wallonia, the production will employ 18 technicians and use Walloon rental equipment. Mikros Liège will produce special effects, Charbon provide mastering services and Dame Blanche, Sonic Pil and Mute and solo handle the post-production.

« Jumbo », the first feature film of Belgian director Zoé Wittock’s, would be a good fit for Cannes’ Critics Week. Produced in Belgium by Kwassa, “Jumbo” is about the consuming passion of a young girl for a… carousel. Surprisingly enough, it is based on a true story! 12 days of the shooting will take place in an amusement park in Wallonia generating work for 15 Walloons and equipment rentals expenses. VFX will be handled by Benuts.

« A bigger world » is a majority French film, co-produced by Scope Pictures in Belgium. Based on a true story, it follows the shamanic path of a young Western woman traveling in Mongolia. Featuring well-known French and Belgian actresses Cécile de France and Ludivine Sagnier, the film will be partly shot in Wallonia, in the exact same places where the true events actually happened. It will employ 36 technicians from our region and use local equipment. The post-production will be primarily handled in Wallonia as well. The final product could be a good candidate for Cannes’ Directors’ Forthnight or Un Certain Regard sections…

The four other projects selected are lower-scale productions, certainly less “festivals promising” but all very exciting.

« Albatros » is an original Flemish series, about a group of overweight persons joining in a retreat to fight demons of obesity. It will be entirely filmed in Wallonia, using Walloon equipment. A large part of the post-production will be handled in Wallonia as well, including the sound (Sonicpil), SFX supervision and VFX (Mikros).

Wallimage has decided to continue its collaboration with Velvet through the funding of the second part of Liliane Susewind’s film. 10 days of the shooting will take place in Wallonia, employing technicians from Wallonia and using local equipment. L’Autre Compangie will create VFX and Genval Les Dames handle the dubbing in French.

Iris production came with an ambitious animated Belgian- French- Luxembourg co-production lead by ex-Pixar Carlo Vogele and named “Icar”. A large part of the expenses made in our region will go to Mikros Liege for their work in animation and VFX involves a 40-people team during the whole production phase. And this is the cherry on the cake: voice recording will be handled by Dame Blanche Genval.

The second « Icare » that has been selected is on a completely other tone. It is a documentary dealing with environmental issues focusing on an area jeopardized by critical pollution: the Mediterranean Sea. Produced by Iota and initiated by Patric Jean, this beautiful philosophical reportage will be post-produced in our region by Genval les Dames.

So here we have eight new projects, four of which are directed by Belgian directors and four are co-productions, with five live feature films, one series, one animated and one documentary: an eclectic selection promising enjoyment for the public and work for the Walloons!
