The Scum of the Days

The surreal and poetic story of an idealistic and inventive young man, Colin, who meets Chloe, a young woman who seems to be the incarnation of a Duke Ellington blues. Their idyllic marriage turns sour when Chloe falls ill with a water lily that grows in her lung. To pay for his care, in a fantastical Paris, Colin must work in increasingly absurd conditions, while their apartment deteriorates and their group of friends, including the talented Nicolas, and Chick, fanatic of the philosopher Jean-Sol Partre, disintegrates.

It was the film’s producer, Luc Bossi, who first came up with the idea of adapting Vian’s novel. He proposed a first script to Michel Gondry. The latter declares: “We worked together again, but we kept this idea that he had : this big workshop where the book is made, at the beginning of history. It shows for me that the book is inescapable. It is made of steel, it is indestructible. And this place also says that everything is written in advance. Because when you read “L’Ecume des jours”, you feel that the story is on track, there is a strong sense of inevitability, “explains the director, Bossi continued: “Many people thought the book unsuitable, there is a pun in every sentence! But many chapters of the novel were also naturally cinematic, because Boris Vian was steeped in “pop culture”, marked by cinema, science fiction, jazz.”
