The Oscars open their arms to The Red Turtle

In official competition at Cannes, it won the Special Prize Un certain regard before making the official opening of the Annecy Animation Film Festival on June 13. The great class…

As you know, the national awards season has just begun. And the first nominations are coming in.

Nominated for the European Film Awards, in the running for the Magritte of Belgian cinema (best foreign film category), The Red Turtle has other very international objectives: the César Awards, of course, but also, supreme consecration for an animated film, the Oscars.

All the eyes of the animation aficionados were therefore directed towards Los Angeles today since the news could fall at any moment. The wait has not been in vain: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially announced that Michael Dudok De Wit’s film will participate in the 89th award ceremony of the mythical distinctions that will take place on February 26 in Los Angeles.

This is not the first time that Wallimage is associated with a film that makes its way to the famous Dolby Theater: besides Rundskop, nominated as best foreign film, three other feature films supported by the Walloon fund have already found themselves in the final quintet of the best animated films: Brendan and the Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea and Ernest and Celestine. No wins so far, but four lasting memories.

This year, our turtle will face a French feature film, Ma vie de Courgette, which enjoys a rather exceptional love rating, but also three American works: Kubo and the Magic Armor, Vaiana and Zootopie.

The fight will be epic… but we’ve seen turtles win more complicated competitions.
